Who we are
We are a small family farm focused on pasture raised poultry and eggs. Red Dirt Ranch is located in Ellenboro, Nc. Ellenboro, is a rural blip on the map between Asheville and Shelby.
All of our birds are raised outside on pasture. All have access to grass bugs and sunshine as mother nature intended. Our meat birds are raised in Salatin style pens (see photo right) and moved twice a day to fresh ground. Our laying flocks are free range in the winter and range fed in the summer. We use a mobile coop and electronet in the summer to keep the hens out of our garden and field crops. We offer both our layers and meat birds locally sourced grain. Hopefully, we will be able to say local grain is GMO free in late 2011!!! Hope for a good growing season.
We are not a certified organic farm nor, do we have any desire to be. We do use organic practices. At this time we feel that the word "organic" is being overused by agribusiness. If your unsure of the farmer by all means "organic" can be a great thing. We advocate getting to know your local farmer and asking questions.
